When the walls were remodelled in the 1860s to accommodate St Mary’s beautiful cedar roof, an architrave was installed at the top of the walls of the nave with a lengthy Biblical inscription. Over the years the gold paint on the letters has become very indistinct and it was planned to repaint them as part of the cleaning work. Cleaning, however, has revealed that not only were the letters themselves painted but above and below the inscription was a gold band painted into two recessed grooves.
With approval from the Bristol Diocese, both the letters and the gold bands will be repainted showing their original design and, we hope, a bit of a wow!
