When Henry Ellacombe arrived in Bitton in 1817 he was appalled by the activities of the Bitton Bell Ringing Teams. There were two teams at the time. He found their general behaviour unacceptable as well as their practice of ringing the bells for any private event such as someone’s birthday, for which they were paid.
Having failed to gain control he had the locks changed on the ringing chamber locking the bell ringers out, and using his extensive engineering knowledge installed a chiming device that could be operated by one person. The bell ringers had to accept defeat.
You can see the Chiming Apparatus and other artefacts of St Mary’s, at our open day on Saturday 13th September 10.00am to 5pm. We are open as part of Heritage Open Days. The event is free and partnered with Bitton Parish History Group. More information on our website where you can reserve a free ticket to one of the tours. Refreshments available. Parking in adjacent Glebe Field.
