Before the seventeenth century, Twelfth Night, on 5th January, and the Epiphany were celebrated and Christmas decorations, such as they were, stayed in place much longer, often until Candlemas on 2nd February. The superstition that bad luck will befall anyone who has not taken their decorations down by Epiphany is a relatively modern invention – so if you haven’t had enough, you know what to do.
