Is there a bright orange waiting for you at St Mary’s this Sunday, 12th January?
Our Christingle Service is a lovely event for all ages, but especially for children. It raises money for the Children’s Society and is a celebration of the light and love of Christ in the gloom of January. Christingles are oranges wrapped in red tape, decorated with dried fruit or sweets, with a candle on the top. Each element of a Christingle has a special meaning and helps to tell the Christian story:
- · The orange represents the world
- · The red tape symbolises the love and blood of Christ
- · The sweets and dried fruit represent all of God’s creations
- The lit candle represents Jesus’s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness.
During the service, each person takes a Christingle, and the candles are all lit, creating a warm glow that symbolises the light of Christ and bringing hope to people living in darkness. You can also eat the sweets afterwards!
