Bitton’s Anglo Saxon Church – Heritage Open Day Saturday 13th September

There has been a church in Bitton longer than there has been a kingdom of England.   No one knows how long there has been a place of worship here, but we do know that some  parts of the walls of St Mary’s Church date back for a thousand, even 1300 years. High on the east wall of the nave are the remains of a massive stone rood, a figure of Christ on the cross that has been dated to around the year 1000AD.  Only remnants remain, but enough to calculate its size and design.

You can see the surviving elements of the rood and other treasures at the open day on Saturday 13th September 10.00am to 5pm.  You may also  hear some fascinating tales about the church and the people who used it .

We are open as part of Heritage Open Days.  The event is free and partnered with Bitton Parish History Group.  More information on our website  where you can  to reserve a free ticket to one of the tours.

Refreshments available and parking in adjacent Glebe Field.

Pictures shown is that of the crucified arm of Christ, one of teh rood remnants.
