It’s always satisfying to have a good clean, but most places don’t wait 160 years to do it.
It was in the 1860s, that the roof of St Mary’s was rebuilt in a hammerbeam construction. At the same time, the walls, previously covered in plaster, were stripped bare to reveal the stone underneath. Over the years the stone has become dirty – the result of years of pollution, grime and soot. As part of our redevelopment plans the walls are being professionally cleaned. The results are astonishing and the difference significant – in this picture the bottom section has been cleaned while the upper part has not..
