Arise, Robert de Bytton!

Two hundred years ago, in 1826, during a really hot summer, a stone coffin lid was excavated from the south side of St Mary’s Church and identified as that of Robert de Bytton, whose family had held the ancient manor of Bitton in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The stone coffin lid is still in the chapel of St Mary’s Church, where you can see it today. The church is open every day and we have mounted a special display telling more about the excavations that took place that year and what they revealed.
